I have always been fascinated by what
lays beneath the surface of what
appears to be shiny, clean and
accepted. Like the carnival that once
was new and bright but has become
creaky and run down. Like the faded
elegance of an old tuxedo being worn
by one believes “that is the proper way
to dress“. Like the face with too much
make-up and artificial colored hair. Like
the surgically enhanced body. Bright
happy paint chipping away to reveal a
rusted damaged body. One of my
influences growing up was the
transparent anatomy pages. By turning
a page you could one layer after
another. The blood and muscles so
intense and brilliant.
I take a similar approach in creating my
subjects except that I also want to
expose what they are thinking, their
urges and how they see themselves. I
want to present them inside out. Who
they are becomes how they look. A
common theme that runs through my
work is that my subjects are very
desperate people. Many are trying to
take advantage of others. They feel
they have an angle or appeal that will
get them ahead. Others are desperate
to be accepted. And others are
desperate to dominate a situation.
They are all desperate for the goodtime
that will eventually lead to
disappointment.
