SUPERPENNIE
City Boy’s Failed Love Affair
Doves were meant to be the birds of love songs
Void of colour and impurities
Above imperfections and obscurities
But City Boy screwed up the order.
Bordering his garden of disorder flew
100 grey pigeons
Torpedoing down at his romantic picnic
Prepared with love
For his terrified lover.
Jumping for cover over and under
City Boy is left staring at his beloved cower
In a corner.
He wanted magic but stands waving a stick
To ward off angry rodents of the sky
Who had been boxed for longer than recommended
As he awaited the arrival of the beauty to hold his heart.
Now, this beauty is somewhat angry and scared and waving
shoes
At the approaching threat
Whilst watching a beautiful picnic disappear.
Peck by peck.
With the day not yet wrecked
City Boy took the helms
And set sail the ship
Dipping his wand into the desperately awaited
Exploration site.
His lust for this fine child of darkness
Had his super hero powers on overload
Shooting sparks so hard it was all over
At an embarrassing pace
And he had to excuse himself.

Pennie Varvarides (aka SuperPennie) started writing
around the age of two and only put the pen down to trade
it in for a shiny laptop. She has experimented in script
writing as well as short stories, whilst spending her
teenage years writing music reviews for webzines in
exchange for free CDs. After reading several books by
Chuck Palahniuk she was hugely inspired to begin work
on her own novel in her spare time. The London based
writer began exploring poetry at the beginning of 2009 and
had hit the stage by April ranging from open mic nights to
being a paid feature at different events. Her older sister
Lennie is a theatre practitioner and always putting on
poetry/art nights through her company msft, so Pennie
grew up around such fantasies. She was encouraged to
take to the stage after showing her first poem to Lennie.
Poetry quickly became her new means of expression as
she racked up experience points left, right and centre
whilst reading philosophy as an undergrad. Over the
course of the year SuperPennie has not only charmed
London and Watford with her energy and wit at the
various poetry events, but she has taken charge of classes
of Year 10 North London students in poetry sessions.
Leading the 15 year olds through the process of writing for
themselves and helping them realise poetry can be fun
and can go beyond the tired works they are fed in the
classroom. Varvarides has released her first spoken word
album From The Outside In which can be picked up from
her blog (superpennie.blogspot.com) or in person at a gig
as she pieces together her first book. She has also started
building her own website (superpennie.com) as well as
working her way into the YouTube poetry scene
(youtube.com/peebzzz).
